Linguistics is the scientific study of language and its structure, including its sounds, words, grammar, and meaning. Modern languages, on the other hand, refer to the languages spoken today, as opposed to ancient or extinct languages. Research in linguistics and modern languages can cover a wide range of topics, including:

Language acquisition: How do humans learn language, and what are the factors that contribute to successful language acquisition?

Syntax and grammar: How do we form sentences and structures in language, and what are the rules that govern their use?

Semantics and pragmatics: How do we convey meaning through language, and what are the social and cultural factors that influence communication?

Phonetics and phonology: How do we produce and perceive sounds in language, and how do different languages use sound systems?

Sociolinguistics: How do factors such as gender, age, social class, and ethnicity affect language use and variation?

Language change and variation: How do languages evolve over time, and what factors influence the spread of linguistic features?

Language and cognition: How does language shape our thinking and perception of the world, and how does cognition affect language use?

Research in linguistics and modern languages can have important practical applications, such as improving language teaching methods, developing language technologies, and promoting cross-cultural understanding.

Linguistics Modern Languages Research Highlights

Machine translation: The development of machine translation technologies has made it possible to automatically translate text between languages. These technologies rely on natural language processing algorithms and statistical models to analyze and translate language.

Neurolinguistics: Neurolinguistics is the study of the neural mechanisms underlying language processing in the brain. Recent research in this field has uncovered new insights into how the brain processes and comprehends language.

Sociolinguistics: Sociolinguistics is the study of how social factors, such as ethnicity, gender, and social class, influence language use and variation. Recent research in this field has revealed new insights into the social and cultural factors that shape language.

Language acquisition: Research on language acquisition has shown that infants are capable of learning multiple languages simultaneously, and that exposure to multiple languages can have cognitive benefits later in life.

Computational linguistics: Computational linguistics is the study of how computers can process and understand natural language. This field has led to the development of intelligent virtual assistants, such as Siri and Alexa, which can respond to spoken commands and questions.

Language evolution: Research on language evolution has shown that language change can be rapid and unpredictable, and that the spread of linguistic features is influenced by social and cultural factors.

Language and culture: Studies of language and culture have revealed how language is deeply embedded in cultural practices and can reflect cultural values and beliefs. This research has helped to promote cross-cultural understanding and to support language preservation efforts.

The entire procedure for admission to the research programs encompasses a Research Entrance Exam (RET) and then an Interview/Viva Voce. The performance of a candidate in the RET is given 70% weightage, and the remaining 30% weightage is given to his/her performance at the Interview.
